Most people wear shirts every day without ever noticing one interesting detail: men’s shirts button on the right, while women’s shirts button on the left. Although it seems like a small design choice, this difference has existed for centuries and has a practical explanation rooted in history.
In earlier times, wealthy women were often dressed by maids or attendants. Placing the buttons on the left made it easier for right-handed helpers to fasten the garments. Men, on the other hand, traditionally dressed themselves, so having the buttons on the right was more convenient for right-handed wearers.
While the need for personal dressers has mostly disappeared, the fashion industry continues to follow this old tradition. Today, the difference in button placement remains a recognizable feature that reflects historical customs rather than modern practicality.
