However, fate did not favor Karl Henize. Just on his second day at the advanced base camp at 6,705 meters (22,000 feet), he began to show signs of altitude sickness. His lungs started to fill with plasma—a symptom of high-altitude pulmonary edema, one of the most dangerous illnesses at high altitudes. He failed to descend in time and passed away at 5,486 meters (18,000 feet), leaving behind his unfulfilled dreams.
His death was a heartbreaking tragedy and a cruel irony of fate. The man who had flown among the stars, exploring the universe’s greatest mysteries, succumbed to the harshness of the very planet he called home.
